Why stories
Stories can make difficult health ideas easier to discuss
A story can introduce a choice, question or feeling without asking anyone to disclose a private experience.
-
01
A shared starting point
Cancer and health can feel abstract, frightening or too adult for a classroom conversation. A story gives children and adults somewhere to begin.
-
02
Imagination alongside evidence
Characters, humour and pictures can make an idea memorable, but the creative route must preserve the underlying health meaning.
-
03
Read together
A trusted adult can read alongside a child, answer questions honestly and say when they need to find out more.
-
04
Clear about the limits
A fictional event is not clinical proof, and a comic title is not a medical claim. Stories do not replace medical care, mental-health support or safeguarding.
